Yoga is a practice for self-understanding.  A consistent practice can improve your life in so many ways.  I encourage you to start now, no matter your strength, flexibility or age. 

Come to class and learn the basics.  I will teach you enough so that you can practice at home, if that is what you want to do.


Iyengar yoga is Hatha Yoga as taught by BKS Iyengar. It emphasizes the development of strength, stamina, flexibility, focus and balance. The practice of Iyengar yoga unwinds physical knots and mental tensions.

Iyengar yoga systemically unwinds the body and opens the spirit.  It is good for everyone because over the years, Mr. Iyengar developed the use of props. Our use of blocks, straps, blankets and other materials makes every pose accessible to anyone. That means that whether we are stiff or flexible, weak or strong, young or young-at-heart, the effects of yoga are open to us.

Doing yoga the Iyengar way means that emphasis is placed on precision, anatomical alignment and full awareness. When the body is placed in the correctly aligned posture and the attention is fully engaged in the pose, the student can begin to experience the harmony that is Yoga.

Mr. Iyengar has been teaching for over 70 years. He is 94 now - and still practicing, writing, teaching and sharing his knowledge. He has seen thousands of bodies and figured out what truly works.  We are lucky that he has passed on his teachings to those who care to pay attention.  Iyengar yoga is not a workout – it is not hot or cardiovascular.  Yet, you will find that it is a strong physical and mental practice.  Come to class expecting to work with focus.  You will challenge your body and your mind.


Iyengar yoga offers the most rigorous teacher certification program in the world.  To be certified at the first basic level, you must first practice for many years, graduate from a teacher training program, apprentice with a certified teacher, have two teachers approve of your teaching, and pass two separate assessments. 

Assessment includes demonstrated practice, pranayama, and a comprehensive written test that includes knowledge of anatomy, physiology, yoga philosophy, Sanskrit, and teaching concepts. Of course, testing also includes evaluation of teaching proficency by a 3-person panel of seasoned Iyengar teachers.

Six levels of proficency are tested in the United States. Each level is progressive, building on knowledge developed in the previous level. Standards and syllabi are designed by BKS Iyengar for each level. Assessment itself is administered through our national organization and held each year at specific yoga centers around the United States.

I am certified beyond the basic level, having tested through four levels. Today I am certified as a Junior Intermediate 3 teacher. Few, even among Iyengar teachers, choose to persue certification beyond the basic level because it is so rigorous.

I find assessment extremely worthwhile for me and my students. One of my greatest joys is mentoring others through the assessment process. And, even today, I continue my training and preparation for the next assessment.
