Breathing is so simple and obvious we often take it for granted, ignoring the power it has to affect body and spirit. With each inhale we nourish our body with oxygen. Each exhale can purge toxins and stress.
Breathing affects our state of mind. It can make us excited or calm, tense or relaxed. It can make our thinking confused or clear. The ancient yogis developed breathing techniques to maximize the benefits of prana, our life force. Pranayama – these breathing techniques – are used in yoga as a separate practice to help clear and cleanse the body and mind. Pranayama is used in preparation for meditation, and supports asana to maximize the benefits of the practice and focus the mind.
This 4-part series will introduce you to the practice and benefits of pranayama. You will learn how and why to practice pranayama in the tradition of BKS Iyengar. You will also learn to set-up and begin the initial stages of your pranayama practice at home. This class will be deeply illuminating and recuperative. This series is open to beginners and those familiar with pranayama. The material will be introduced in a progressive manner. Students should plan on attending all four sessions.
